Top 10 Legit Online Teaching Companies (ESL Jobs)

If you are looking for a work-from-home opportunity that allows you to work minimal hours for over $20 per hour then you are in the right place! This is a list of 10 online English Second Language (ESL) companies that includes providing essential information so you can compare and pick which works best for you!

I have not personally worked for each of these companies, but I have, however, gathered information from reputable sources that have worked for these companies, that way I can give you the best information!

Note that these are not listed in any specific order, although number one is definitely my favorite.

1. Qkids

My personal favorite. This company uses a highly interactive platform and does not require any props unless you feel it’s necessary to help you teach. I personally love this company over all others and work for them daily. 

They aren’t the highest paying among all the options, however, they are the most flexible and easy-going—not to mention their stellar treatment of their teachers! They have a No penalty cancellation, unlike other companies that punish you and may even deduct pay that’s worth more than the class itself! Here are some more of their specs:

Hourly pay: $16-20/hr

Age range: 4-12 years old

Class Length: 28 minutes

Minimum Availability: 6 hours/wk

Certification requirements: TESOL certificate required. Bachelor’s degree in any field required.

Tech Requirements: Computer must be 2.0 GHz or above; Internet speed of 2Mbps or higher

Residency: You must live in the USA or Canada.

2. VIPkid

This is a popular company that pays well, is flexible, and it has many opportunities for teachers to market themselves to make more money. They do requires props for every lesson, but the earning potential is great and they give raises! You could easily make over $1000 a month with this company. Here are their specs:

Hourly pay: up to $24/hr

Age Range: 4-12 years old

Class Length: 25 minutes

Minimum Availability: None. You can open and close availability as necessary

Certification Requirements: TESOL required, but can be acquired through them. Bachelor’s degree in any field required.

Tech Requirements: Minimum of 4GB Ram and 20 Mbps internet speed

Residency: You must reside in the US or Canada to work for this company.

3. Cambly

This platform has average pay, but is unique because you can teach children or adults! It is more of a conversational platform where you chat with people face to face. The company also offers no penalty cancellations, you can work from anywhere in the world from your phone or tablet, and it’s paid weekly! Here are their specs:

Hourly pay: $0.17/minute ($10.20/hour)

Age Range: Children or Adults

Class Length: No limit

Minimum Availability: No minimum

Certification Requirements: None

Tech Requirements: Phone or tablet with good quality internet

Residency: Work from anywhere!

4. TutorABC (iTutorGroup)

Although this company isn’t the highest paying of the group, it only requires 5 hours of your time per week, and they have no penalties for cancellation. You can also work for them no matter where you live. Here are more of their specs:

Hourly pay: up to $23 per hour

Age Range: Children and Adults

Class Length: 25-45 minutes

Minimum Availability: 5 hours per week

Certification Requirements: TESOL and Bachelor’s degree in any field required

Tech Requirements: 2GB Ram and Good quality internet

Residency: Anywhere!

5. Education First (EF)

This company has a special feature. You can teach adult and you can book all the time. You can make last minute cancellations and pick up classes last minute too. The best part I that you don’t have to work during Beijing peak times, however it pays more if you do. Finally, they have a US-based headquarters, which may or may not be of importance to you. Just a fun fact. Here are their specs:

Hourly pay: up to $20/hr

Age Range: Ages 5-10

Class Length: 25 minutes

Minimum Availability:

Certification Requirements:

Tech Requirements: Minimum 40 Hr TEFL Certificate or equivalent. Reliable Wifi

Residency: Living in U.S.

6. GoGokid

This company has moderate pay with raises and it has simple lessons with no cancellation penalties. It also requires a bachelor’s degree. Here’s a little more about them:

Hourly pay: $14-25/hr

Age Range: K-12

Class Length: 25 minutes

Minimum Availability: No minimum

Certification Requirements: Bachelor’s degree

Tech Requirements: Minimum of 4GB Ram and 20 Mbps

Residency: US/Canada

7. Palfish

Palfish is a popular company due no only to its pay, but for the ability to teach from your phone or tablet. The company has no cancellation penalties and you only need to teach 3-5 hours per week. Here’s some more information:

Hourly pay: $10-30/hr

Age Range: Children or Adults

Class Length: 25 minutes

Minimum Availability: 3-5 hours weekly

Certification Requirements:  Bachelor’s degree in any field an TESOL required

Tech Requirements: Phone or tablet with good quality internet

Residency: Work from anywhere!

8. BlingABC

Although this company has a few more requirements of teachers, it is one of the highest paying ESL companies and they offer raises. Likewise, it has not penalty cancellations and you can work from anywhere, but your schedule is fixed, which can be a good thing because you don’t have to fight for bookings! Also, all the teaching materials are provided, so you need not prep before lessons. Here’s what you need to know:

Hourly pay: $21-51/hr

Age Range: K-12

Class Length: 25 minutes

Minimum Availability: Teachers who apply at the beginning of the semester get priority scheduling, and those that come in the middle of the semester get more standbys.

Certification Requirements: TESOL and Bachelor’s degree in any field required

Tech Requirements: Minimum of 4GB Ram and 20 Mbps

Residency: Anywhere you reside!

9. Magic Ears

This is also a popular company due to its high hourly pay compared to the average ESL company, and it doesn’t require a minimum number of hours. The platform is moderately interactive and you teach children and teens. Here’s some more key information:

Hourly pay: $18-26/hr

Age Range: K-12

Class Length: 25 minutes

Minimum Availability: None

Certification Requirements: TESOL and Bachelor’s degree in any field required

Tech Requirements: Minimum of 4GB Ram and 10 Mbps

Residency: US/Canada

10. Boxfish

This company is highly flexible and has no time restrictions. It offers moderate pay with no cancellation penalties. You can teach classes on demand whenever you’re available or you can teach pre-booked classes. All the material is included in the app, so you don’t need props, which is a major plus for most people. Here’s some more about them: 

Hourly pay: $20-22/hr

Age Range: K-12

Class Length: 5 or 10 minute on-demand classes, or 25 minute scheduled classes

Minimum Availability: None

Certification Requirements: TESOL and Bachelor’s degree in any field required

Tech Requirements: Phone or tablet with good quality internet

Residency: US/Canada
