Teaching and Tutoring

1. Qkids

Qkids is an online English teaching platform comprised of over 800,000 Chinese students, ages 4-12. As a teacher, you don’t need to know how to speak any Chinese since the platform is so highly interactive. Since the platform is so well thought through, you also need minimal props (if any at all) to teach students. Personally, I don’t use props.

Qkids is by far my favorite ESL platform. I am very glad I chose to stick with them over other platforms. They are so understanding and treat you like you actually have a life outside of work. Other ESL companies can greatly penalize you for canceling classes, and some even deduct pay or suspend you if it gets too extensive.

What are the hours?

Every morning, the available time frame is Monday – Friday from 6:30 am – 9 am Eastern Time. There are also evening hours on Friday and Saturday from 8:30 am – 11:40 pm Eastern Time. You will be notified before these hours change for Daylight Savings Time. There are additional hours available during peak season, like in the summer when kids are not in school. Again, you’ll be notified of any additional opportunities.

What if I need to cancel?

As an independent contractor, you can set your availability each week. Qkids has an amazing cancellation policy in which you can cancel your scheduled class 5 hours ahead of time with no penalty. Even if you cancel within the 5-hour window, you still won’t get in “trouble” per se. They are VERY understanding, so if something happens, you can simply write them in the app and let them know what’s going on.

How is the class structure?

You will be teaching anywhere from 1-4 students at a time. Each lesson is 30 minutes in length and you get a 10-minute break in between classes if you choose to teach them back-to-back. The platform is probably one of the most interactive ones in the online ESL world. Some teachers choose to use props, however, it is not required. I have never used them—the Qkids platform virtually provides everything you might need to teach the lesson.

How much will I be paid?

Pay is $8 base rate PER CLASS. Since classes are only 30 minutes long, you can teach 2 classes in an hour, thus earning you $16 – $20 per hour once bonuses are factored in. They aren’t the highest paying ESL Company out there—they’re about average. The benefits of working with the company, notably the attendance policy, flexibility, and overall teacher experience, make it well worth it. Trust me…the stress that you can encounter from more strict companies is not worth the extra 1 or 2 dollars they offer.

What are the requirements?

To teach for Qkids, you must live in the U.S. or Canada and have a Bachelor’s degree in any field. You are also required to have an English teaching certificate like a TESOL or TEFL. You can acquire a 120-hour TESOL from the International Open Academy for less than $20 on Groupon. It only takes a few hours to complete, so don’t be intimidated by the name.

What’s the application process like?

Apply > Initial Screening > Demo Interview 1 > Demo Interview 2 > Trial Class > Contract

  1. Apply here by creating an account and uploading your resume and availability. You will also need to submit a 1-2 minute introduction video in which you will introduce yourself, where you live, and your educational background with kids. You will then tell or read a children’s story.
  2. Initial screening: They will check to ensure you meet the requirements.
  3. Demo 1: You’ll mostly demonstrate your mastery of the Qkids platform. You will be given access long before your demo, so you can practice and learn the controls. Such tasks may include knowing how to adjust student volume and using interactive tools.
  4. Demo 2: is a bit more serious. This one is where you will be asked more interview questions like, “What qualities do you possess that would make you a good fit for this position?” Then you will demonstrate your ability to teach. The trainer will act as a student, and you will teach her. It only takes about 25 minutes max.
  5. Trial Class: Now is the nerve-wracking part. You’re going to teach real students! Everyone is nervous, but don’t freight. Do it just like you practiced. Watch videos on YouTube from people that can give you tips and tricks. You will have 2-5 trial classes, and after each one, the coach will give you constructive feedback that you can work on for your next classes. FYI: Yes, you will be paid for each of these classes.
  6. Contract: You made it! Once you have passed your trial classes, you will receive an email inviting you to join the Qkids family. Your contract will be enclosed and you will click a link that will allow you to virtually initial and sign the contract where applicable. Congrats!

2. VIPKid

VIPKid is an online English Second Language (ESL) company that will hire you to teach Chinese students (ages 4-12) the English language. They are a very popular ESL company and for good reason. VIPkid has over 100,000 teachers and 500,000 students!

You may be wondering how in the world you can teach as a late-night job. Well, you have to remember that the students are in China. That’s on the other side of the world! When we are getting up in the morning, they are going to be. When we are eating lunch, they are fast asleep in the middle of the night. With that understanding, the working hours will make more sense to you.

How is the class structure?

You will be teaching 25-minute 1-on-1 classes with students. As an independent contractor, you will be in charge of your own schedule and availability. This allows maximum flexibility. There is also no minimum number of hours you are required to teach, so work as much as you’d like.

What is the pay structure?

The pay structure is $7 – $9 base pay rate PER CLASS. Since each class is only 25 minutes, you can teach 2 classes per hour, thus making a $14 – $18 per hour base rate. After bonuses and incentives, you could be making anywhere from $15 – $22 per hour.

What are the hours?

The peak time is often around 6 pm – 9 pm Beijing time. So, how do those hours translate? From November to March, that is 5 am-8 am Eastern Time. Those are the hours Monday – Friday. On Saturday and Sunday, availability is from 8 pm – 9 pm. China does not recognize Daylight Savings, but here in North America, we do. So from March to November, move those time slots forward by 1 hour. In case none of that made sense here’s a screenshot:

What are the requirements?

The requirements to teach with VIPkid are that you need to have at least 2 years of experience in teaching, tutoring, coaching, or mentoring. You are also required to have a Bachelor’s degree (in any field) and live in the U.S. or Canada.

How does it work?

First, you choose what industries, styles, and designs you want to work with. To find clients, you have 3 options. First, you can bring in any clients you already have. That’s easy. Second, you can compete in a contest.

How much can I earn?

You get to set your prices for the work you provide if you are working 1-on-1 with clients. If you are competing with other designers, then the company signifies how much they are willing to pay, then they choose which designer they want to work with.

Rates vary depending on the type of design work. So, you could probably get paid much more to design a website than to design a business card, for example. Regardless, you will be paid in 3 business days or less.

Get to selling! Keep up with the latest trends, wants, and needs of the customer to ensure you are always giving the people what they want.

Pro tip: As your site grows and your traffic increases, you can go ahead and increase hosting. For the most cost-effective, yet efficient way to move forward, transfer your domain name to Namecheap for less than $7 per YEAR. For hosting that will accommodate your increased number of visitors, use Siteground for less than $5 per month.
